Hunt Middle School Band FAQ
Do I need to have prior musical experience to be in band?
No! Students will learn the fundamentals of reading music as well as how to play an instrument.
Asthma? Braces? Is it possible?
Absolutely! There are good instrument choices for every student who wants to be in band. We have many successful band students who have braces and/or asthma. Playing a wind instrument can actually be beneficial for those who have asthma as it helps strengthen the lungs.
What instruments are offered in band?
Beginners are started on flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. We will help you choose the instrument that is best for you at our instrument screening and selection day in March.
Is it possible to be in Band, Pre-AP, GT, and other classes?
Yes! Band creates habits of excellence that carry over to other classes. Many of our band students are involved in Pre-AP and GT classes.
When do the band classes meet?
Beginning band meets as a regular class at different times throughout the school day. Students are grouped into classes according to what instrument they play. Skills developed during beginner band are to prepare students for full band class in 7th and 8th grade.
Can my child be successful even if I don't have musical talent?
Yes! The most important requirement for success is the desire to succeed. We begin students from a very basic yet detailed approach to learning the instrument.
Can I be in athletics and band?
In 7th and 8th grade, YES! Athletics are not offered for any 6th grade student. A majority of our 7th and 8th grade students participate in band AND athletics. We work very closely with the Pearson coaching staff to make sure the kids get to participate in all activities.
Can I be in band and other electives?
In 6th grade, students only have one elective. Because of the unique nature of playing a musical instrument, we try to encourage students to begin band in 6th grade and then take other electives along with band in their 7th and 8th grade years. We also have band students who participate in theater, art, choir, etc. as well as band in the 7th and 8th grade.
Are certain instruments for girls and others for boys?
Definitely NOT! Instrument choices are not based on a student's gender, but rather their desire to play that instrument. Instrument selection is based primarily upon the facial characteristics of the student, and, most importantly, their personal choice.
What is the after-school commitment for a beginning band student?
Beginners are required to attend only four (4) performances their first year: a fall demonstration concert, a winter concert, a Music Festival in the spring (during school), a solo contest in May, and a spring concert. Other than these few performances there are NO after school responsibilities or activities.
Should I rent or purchase an instrument?
RENT! Renting an instrument will give your child the opportunity to begin in band with only a small initial investment. Your child can have the advantages of a brand new instrument, such as pride of ownership and freedom from error due to poor equipment. The instrument can be returned at any time; all rent applies towards purchase.
What about buying used instruments?
Some used instruments are a good bargain; however, you could spend more on repairs than the instrument is worth. We ask that if you purchase a used instrument, let a Hunt band director examine it first. Please do not purchase from Amazon or department stores as these are often not repairable. We recommend local companies like Brookmays or Music & Arts.
Can my child start playing as soon as he/she gets an instrument?
To prevent costly repairs and bad habits, we prefer the instrument stay in the case during the summer. Instruments will stay in the band hall during the first few weeks of school until formal instruction on care and assembly is given.
